CHAPTER 6
After interviewing the professors, which proved as Charlie had predicted, to be a waste of time, they dropped the discs off at the lab and returned to the station. Graham took one look at them and insisted he nip out to grab a sandwich for each of them before the bakerâs shut.
âYouâre an absolute star. I donât care what the others say about you behind your back, Graham, youâll do for me.â Katy winked and accepted the offered sandwich he was holding out to her.
âDonât listen to the boss, Graham, I never do,â Charlie said. She took the bag he offered her and peered inside.
âThey only had cheese and tomato or ham and tomato. I took a punt on who would prefer which.â
âGreat, Iâve got the ham one,â Katy said, less than enthusiastic at the curled-up offering.
Charlie groaned. âDonât tell me, you want to swap.â
âYou donât mind, do you?â
âLike I have an option.â Charlie switched bags and sipped at her coffee.
Katy munched on a corner of her sandwich and then addressed the team, informing them of how things had developed at the university that morning. âSo, it would seem that weâre on the lookout for an individual who is keen on keeping us guessing, judging by the shifty way he dresses and skulks around the place.â
âDo you think the perp was aware of where the cameras on campus are, boss?â Graham asked. He placed his hands behind his head and tipped back in his chair.
âIt would appear to be the case. The young security guard slipped up by allowing the students to gain access to the roof.â
âDo you think the culprit is a member of the group, or are we saying that heâs likely got it in for all of them?â Patrick asked.
âHard to say at this point. Charlie and I have to compare notes on the rest of the group. My first inclination would be to say itâs someone from outside the group; they seem to be a close-knit unit. Maybe another student is jealous of the way they get on so well together, but then, would another student have it in them to set up the two deaths as suicides to cover the fact that both girls were murdered? I find that hard to believe, not impossible by a long shot, but still considerably hard to believe.â
âI agree,â Charlie said. âLetâs hope Forensics come up trumps with a possible ID of the suspect, because without that, weâre screwed.â
âThatâs true,â Katy admitted reluctantly. âWhat about background checks, have those been carried out in our absence?â She directed the question at Karen Titchard.
âIâve made a start on the people involved in the first case but I havenât got around to the second one yet. I donât usually ask for help, boss, but in this instance, I fear Iâm going to need it.â
âYour wish is my command. Stephen, why donât you lend Karen a hand on this one?â
Stephen left his desk and pulled up a chair next to Karen. âDo with me what you will, Karen, within reason.
